Design, Health & Responsibility in a Plastic World
At OYOO Style, we are a designer brand. Every piece we create begins with a question: how will this feel, live, and endure? Material choice is one of the most important answers.
In today’s fashion industry, the majority of textiles are derived from oil-based plastics. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and elastane are all forms of plastic spun into fibres. They dominate mass production because they are inexpensive and easy to scale. But good design looks beyond convenience to consequence.
We choose natural fibres wherever possible not as a trend, but as a deliberate design philosophy rooted in wellbeing, longevity, and responsibility.
Designing in a plastic-saturated world
Plastics have quietly embedded themselves into everyday life. Clothing made from synthetic fibres sheds microscopic plastic particles each time it is worn and washed. These microplastics enter waterways, soil systems, food chains, and ultimately, human bodies. Once released, they persist for decades.
Choosing natural fibres is one way to reduce participation in this invisible cycle. It is not about purity or perfection, but about awareness and intention.
Natural fibres and the human body
What we wear sits against our skin for hours at a time. Skin is a living organ involved in temperature regulation, sensation, and absorption.
Scientific research shows that synthetic, plastic-derived textiles are less breathable than natural fibres, more likely to trap heat and moisture, and often treated with chemical finishes to improve stretch, stain resistance, or durability.
Natural fibres behave differently at a structural level. Cotton and linen are hydrophilic, meaning they absorb moisture and allow it to evaporate, supporting the body’s natural cooling processes. Linen, in particular, is known for its temperature-regulating qualities, especially in warm climates.
Comfort is not accidental. It is designed.
A quieter kind of luxury
Natural materials crease, soften, fade, and evolve. They respond to time rather than resisting it. They invite care instead of disposability.
To us, this is a quieter, more intelligent luxury. One rooted in honesty, tactility, and longevity. Natural fibres feel alive because they are alive.
OYOO Style designs pieces meant to be lived in, not consumed and discarded. Longevity is a design principle. Integrity is a design principle. Material choice is where those principles take physical form.
An evidence-led choice
Our commitment to natural fibres is informed by both values and research. We pay attention to the growing body of science examining microplastics, textiles, environmental impact, and human health.
We do not claim perfection. We claim intention.
In a fast, synthetic world, we choose to design slowly, consciously, and with evidence in mind. To offer garments and homeware that honour the body, the maker, and the environment they move through.
